I love how the art and illustrations throughout the works of Tolkien and Lewis fit their stories so well. From Pauline Baynes’ illustrations for the Narnia books to Tolkien’s and Alan Lee’s, they are often whimsy, emotional, and evocative.
I wanted to share a few of my favorites today. I thought I’d go through all the books, but I realized that would make this post forever long, so instead, I’m sharing some from The Hobbit, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Beren and Lúthien.
This first one also features the 2012 cover Hobbitus Ille: The Latin Hobbit. I love how this captures Smaug so well.
